Red supergiants in M31: the Humphreys–Davidson limit at high metallicity

چکیده
ABSTRACT The empirical upper limit to red supergiant (RSG) luminosity, known as the Humphreys–Davidson (HD) limit, has been commonly explained being caused by stripping of stellar envelopes metallicity-dependent line-driven winds. As such, theoretical expectation is that HD should be higher at lower metallicity, where weaker mass-loss rates mean initial masses are required for an envelope stripped. In this paper, we test prediction measuring luminosity function RSGs in M31 and comparing it those LMC SMC. We find log (Lmax/L?) = 5.53 ± 0.03 (Z ? Z?), consistent with found both ? 0.5 Z?) SMC 0.25 while RSG distributions these three galaxies within 1?. therefore no evidence a metallicity dependence on function, conclude winds main sequence not cause limit.

Yellow Supergiants in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) 1
The yellow supergiant content of nearby galaxies can provide a critical test of stellar evolution theory, bridging the gap between the hot, massive stars and the cool red supergiants. But, this region of the color-magnitude diagram is dominated by foreground contamination, requiring membership to somehow be determined. Fortunately, the large negative systemic velocity of M31, coupled to its hig...
متن کاملThe Effective Temperatures and Physical Properties of Magellanic Cloud Red Supergiants: The Effects of Metallicity
We present moderate-resolution optical spectrophotometry of 36 red supergiants (RSGs) in the LMC and 39 RSGs in the SMC. Using the MARCS stellar atmosphere models to fit this spectrophotometry, we determine the reddenings, effective temperatures and other physical properties, such as bolometric luminosity and effective stellar radii, and compare these to stellar evolutionary models. Current add...
متن کاملStis Uv Spectroscopy of Early B Supergiants in M31
We analyze STIS spectra in the 1150-1700 Å wavelength range obtained for six early B supergiants in the neighboring galaxy M31. Because of their likely high (nearly solar) abundance, these stars were originally chosen to be directly comparable to their Galactic counterparts, and represent a much-needed addition to our current sample of B-type supergiants, in our efforts to study the dependence ...
متن کاملUnderstanding B-type supergiants in the low metallicity
Despite a resurgence of effort over the last decade in the area of massive stars there is still ambiguity over their evolutionary path, contamination of their surface abundances and the behaviour of their stellar winds. Here 10 SMC B-type supergiants are analysed applying a unified model atmosphere code FASTWIND to intermediate resolution spectra from the ESO Multi Mode Instrument (EMMI) on the...
متن کاملRed Supergiants in the Local Group
Galaxies in the Local Group span a factor of 15 in metallicity, ranging from the super-solar M31 to the Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte (WLM) galaxy, which is the lowest-metallicity (0.1Z⊙) Local Group galaxy currently forming stars. Studies of massive star populations across this broad range of environments have revealed important metallicitydependent evolutionary trends, allowing us to test the accurac...
